In response to which type mulch to purchase–There is an article in the February/March 2009 Audubon Columbus written by Toni Stahl, National Wildlife Federation liaison. She writes: “Choose hardwood mulch over cypress mulch. Cypress mulch is from endangered habitats. Cypress trees are where we may find the last of the Ivory Billed Woodpeckers.”

It won’t help much with spring mulching, but now that yard waste won’t be collected by the city people can consider creating their own mulch and compost by collecting grass, leaves, sticks, etc.

I met with Mark Young, Columbus Rec and Parks this week. As I understand it the budget for Lawn Waste pick up has been cut (as voted by City Council this week). However, Lawn Waste will be collected during peak months–just not as regularly as in the past.
JIM ROBERTS from Watershed Organic Lawn Care says he will build custom compost bins for residents. His phone number: 774-0532.
