Paul Bingle wrote to say he and Linda Paul saw a dead fox lying at the edge of the Adena Brook Rain Garden early Saturday morning, September 20. I saw it, too. Blood evidence showed it had been hit by a vehicle on High Street and likely stumbled to the grassy edge before dying. He was still warm when I placed him in the ravine.
NOTE FROM LISA FOSCO, Ohio Wildlife Center:
The fox was killed crossing High street just past midnight. One of my volunteers saw it hit, called me just as it died, then moved it off the road. I assume that is the same fox. :<Lisa

Too bad about the fox. Hopefully the female stays nearby and some of their kits will live in the ravine. They’re graceful creatures. We’ve heard them whistling and shrieking below the house throughout the summer. I think Cari and I heard foxes (plural) several nights ago, so maybe they’ll stay. Maybe they were mourning the body. I know that coyotes keep family ties and serenade their kin with melodic howls–frequently between parents and their offspring–like a coyote cell phone? Anyway I’m saddened by the untimely roadkill and unfortunately automobiles are major wildlife killers. Best Regards, David Anderson

David–Your message is comforting. I think fox mate for life, so perhaps you heard mourning calls. He was healthy, his coat was full and rich in color, thick tail, eyes clear. It broke my heart. Susan

Hey Susan,
Sad about the fox. Cali, saw something in the ravine by your house about a month ago at 6 am. I walked to the edge and it was a fox. I could not see the color but I could tell by the tale. Cali, barked and the fox moved off. I hope it was not this fox but I don’t know

Hi Susan,
Very sorry to hear about the dead fox.
After returning from Europe in mid-August, I saw the foxes
(sometimes one, sometimes two) fairly regularly for the rest of
that month. But in September their appearances have been less
frequent, and I haven’t seen more than one at a time. I’m certain that I saw one in the daytime on Sunday, September 21, which is the day after you saw the dead one. I’m sure of the date because my son was visiting, and we both saw it out the window. So it seems there is at least one survivor. I’ll keep
an eye out for it.
Yours, Bob Wing

We saw a male fox in our backyard (backing up to the ravine nearer to High St.) early one morning in September. I hope we’ll see the remaining part of the family.
