VIC MAGARY AND HIS FAMILIES ARE THE BEST
This is the second year Vic asked his families to “practice defense” and, in this case, it’s our neighborhood brook’s health their defending. Approximately 80 people (youth/families) removed litter from the brook. Each person took a bag to fill with brook litter. Then we recycled it! That left only 13 bags of trash to haul to the city landfill. The Durst family took the recyclables to CURB at the Weiland Shopping Center. Our group provided pizza, fruit, and water to the volunteers. We composted, used cloth napkins, taught our children what is recyclable and what goes to the landfill, and talked about clean water as good for our bodies, neighborhood, wildlife, and the planet.
These 23 Adena Brook neighbors joined Vic’s families:
Jeff and Phyllis Beuter
Ken Burkhard
Stacy and John Durst, Tanner
Molly Fisher Ryan
Lisa Fosco and James
Ann Laubach, Manny and Dominic
Nan and Bill Platt
Christy Tull, Mitchell, Rayna
Karen Snyder
Susan Michael Barrett
John Carney, candidate for Ohio House Representative, District 22, and Mark Lundine, Vision 2012 Commission City Planner, worked with families to remove litter.
Maureen Lorenz, Columbus Recreation and Parks, planted more swamp milkweed in the rain garden.
Greg Schneider, ODNR, Natural Areas and Preserves, led Will and Marilyn Weiss, Bishop Watterson teachers, on a plant walk as a step towards developing study projects with their students next year.
Mark and Carina Carter continue to maintain the Cooke Road/Indianola/Overbrook corner. Mark mows weekly. Their work is more than our once a month effort. Many thanks for their efforts to improve this area of the neighborhood.
Thank you Bill Platt for photographs.
Bob Wing wrote: I just want to report that for the past 9 days (Sunday July 6 through Monday the 14th) I’ve seen a fox every day except one, and 2 or 3 times on some days. I was a little concerned the one day I didn’t see it, but then the next day I saw two of them, trotting along together. All the sightings have been on my property (Lenappe Dr.)
so evidently they are living nearby. Most sightings (but not all) have been at night. If a leave my house at 3 am and turn on a light, I am likely to see a pair of small eyes looking at me. They don’t seem afraid, but they keep their distance. They have quickly learned that I’m good for a crust of whole-grain bread…

Hello Susan – we are on the North side of Cooke at the bottom of the Adena Brook ravine. We woke Thursday morning with 6 inches in our finished basement. Who in the CITY should we contact ?
Laura Young Mohr responds:
All roads now lead to 311 (or 645-3111) to report city service issues or via that website off the main city page. Also, in the case of a basement backup residents can also call Sewer Maintenance directly at 645-7102 and it’s 24/7 – in case they can’t get through on 311.
It may be helpful to clarify a few things to your neighbor(s) for their understanding:
-
If a result of water/sewage backing up the basement drain they may qualify for the Project Dry Basement backflow valve program; however reporting it as it is occuring is critical to qualify so a crew can verify the main sewer is related to the problem (after the water recedes they cannot tell)
-
If a result of water coming in the wall or windows, that’s a private property responsibility to correct through foundation drains, sump pumps, gutters, downspouts, grading etc. – contact a plumbing company for recommendations
-
If an areawide problem you and your neighbors think should be looked at from an additional capital improvement standpoint, please complete the following questionnaire and submit for consideration: http://utilities.columbus.gov/DOSD/wet-quest.htm
-
It’s important to keep in mind that our recent storm levels were around the 100-200 year frequency levels meaning they are quite unusual and storm sewers are not usually built to handle such volume because they would be quite expensive and it would have a major stormwater rate impact.
I hope that helps.
